Best hotels in Nusa Penida FAQs
The main areas to choose from are the North side, West side, or East side. Think about what you want to do on the island and base yourself close by. The whole island can be traveled in around an hour, so you’ll still get a chance to hit all the main spots if you hire a scooter or taxi driver.
The North is where the main harbours are, and the most urbanised area. Most tourists stay here in Sampalan – the main town on the island. There’s plenty of cool bars and trendy restaurants here, as well as diving schools.
In the West, you’ll find the most beautiful and quiet snorkeling spots at Crystal Bay, Broken beach and Angel’s Billabong.
The East is for the most adventurous – it’s a long and bumpy drive away from the harbours but does offer amazing views. This is where Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach are located, as well as the Instagram famous Rumah Pohon Treehouse.
Where you choose to stay will depend on your traveling style, but you might want to consider staying a couple of days in each if you have the time.
Nusa Penida is located between the islands of Bali and Lombok, on Bali’s southeast coast. It has it’s own unique personality and atmosphere compared to the main island and can be reached easily from Sanur, Padang Bai or Kusamba.
It’s only been popular with tourists since around 2015, making it less overcrowded and more untouched than Bali. It features huge cliffs, making it harder to develop on, unlike its neighbours.
Boat operators set off from mainland Bali, either from Sanur, Kusamba, Padang Bai or Serngan on the East coast. You can buy a ticket from local offices or online.
The price for the boat varies between $20 – $40 per person (280,000 to 550,000 IDR). If you plan your stay, you can book a return ticket which will work out a lot cheaper.
We would recommend leaving from Sanur as it’s the easiest to get to from the pain parts of Bali, including Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta. The boat leaves in the morning and in the afternoon.

You have to reach Nusa Penida on a boat from Bali, taking around 30 minutes depending on where you leave from. A lot of companies offer day tours to certain parts of Nusa Penida, but in our opinion, the island is so beautiful it’s worth staying at least a couple of days.
Nusa Penida is known for beaches and snorkelling. The most famous spot on the island is Kelingking Beach, an amazing viewpoint that overlooks a white sand beach. Staircases have been built going down the rocky cliff, but it takes about 30 minutes to reach the bottom. If you brave it, you’ll be rewarded with privacy on this beautiful, quiet beach.
If you enjoy swimming, the island is ideal due to the calm surrounding waters. There are plenty of diving schools here if you want to learn and swim with Manta Rays.
The island of Nusa Penida is also a great place to experience Balinese culture. There are lots of local temples, and a legend that priests banished evil spirits here. To keep them at peace, the Balinese worship these spirits in the Pura Dalem Ped temple.
Nusa Penida is also home to some amazing views, and is a great place to get Instagram photos. Here’s out guide to the best Nusa Penida photo spots to help you out.
We would suggest spending two nights on the island. This will give you plenty of time to explore, relax and get into the island life vibe.
You’ll arrive on Nusa Penida at Buyuk, Toya Pakeh or Sampalan. There’s no public transport on the island so you’ll need to either get a taxi or hire a scooter to get around.
When you arrive at the harbour there will be plenty of locals who will offer driving services or scooter rentals. If not, ask the staff at your hotel and they can arrange everything. You can even get a scooter delivered to the hotel for you.
If you do choose to rent a scooter, expect to pay more than you’ll pay on Bali. it will cost around 80,000 IDR per day. Please note that as the island isn’t very developed, the roads are not always the smoothest. Make sure to wear long trousers and a helmet for your safety.
If you choose to hire a driver, you’ll pay around 500,000 IDR per day. They’ll also know all the best local spots to take you and can act as a tour guide.
